Embarks on a journey across key milestones in the story of Israeli art. A featured topic will be Israeli artists’ everlasting search for a collective identity: Israeli? Hebrew? Jewish? In these five sessions, we will explore artwork from the early days of Zionism through post-Zionism; discuss pieces that are both local and global; and learn about the tension between the longing for modernism and the urgent commitments to place and time.

1. The Birth of Art from the Spirit of Zionism. 2. Modernism Versus Regionalism of the 1950's. 3. Art, War and Politics in Israel of the 1970's. 4. The Return of the Old Jew in the Israeli Art of the 1990's.
5. The Rise and the Fall of Jerusalem in Israeli Art.
Gideon Ofrat, Ph.D., is a leading Israeli art historian and curator who specializes in Israeli art. Dr. Ofrat has authored over 100 books and catalogs and curated the Israeli pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1993, 1995). He won the Curator Award (2009) on behalf of the Israeli Ministry of Culture and the Lifetime Achievement Award for research on the history of Israel and its settlement on behalf of Yad Ben-Zvi (2015).
This course is in collaboration with the Institute for Israeli Art at the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yafo. Sessions are held in English.
