About the event

Criticism of Israel's military strategies in Gaza predates the current war with Hamas. However, the backlash from the media, the United Nations, and the public has intensified amid Israel's current mission to dismantle Hamas. Join Columbia University Liviu Librescu Professor of Law Matthew Waxman, to learn what constitutes a legal target in wartime, what "proportionality" in war means and whether these definitions change when fighting a terrorist group that does not respect the laws of war. Prof. Waxman will also discuss the definition of genocide and assess its applicability to the October 7 massacre. The presentation will be followed by Q+A.

This program is co-sponsored by Stephen Wise Free Synagogue's Amplify Israel initiative and its Israel Committee, with generous support from the Schwartz Israel Fund, and the Jewish Agency for Israel delegation to UJA.
